Campabadal, Carlos A. Ph. D., Purdue University, December 2013. Ozonation Systems as a Non-Chemical Alternative for Stored Grain Protection. Major Professors: Dirk E. Maier and Richard L. Stroshine. The use of ozone as a non-chemical alternative in stored grain protection was studied by conducting scale-up demonstrations using a fixed bed ozonation system and developing a semi-continuous counterflow and a continuous flow ozonation treatment system. The objectives of this research were to determine the efficacy of ozonation to control insect pests without affecting end-use quality; to prove the concept of the semicontinuous counterflow ozonation system to ozonate grain at a faster rate and quantify its effect on mold growth reduction; to evaluate the efficacy of a modified screw conveyor for pest control by treating grain in a continuous-flow ozonation treatment system; and to determine technically feasible scale-up configurations of each ozonation treatment system including which is most cost-effective. Ozonation treatment in fixed bed systems resulted in 100% insect mortality for adults of maize weevil (MW) and red flour beetle (RFB) with no end-use quality effect on grain. The semi-continuous counterflow system was proven as an effective system to treat grain based on control of three key variables: airflow, ozone mass flow, and exposure time. Mold in stored grain was reduced by more than 50% for ozone cumulative CTP between 340 to 565 ppm-h. The continuous flow system proved to be effective resulting in 100% insect mortality for adult MW and RFB with an average grain retention time of 1.8 minutes and ozone concentration of 47,800 ppm. The scale-up and economic analysis showed that continuous flow ozonation was predicted to have the lowest treatment cost of 1.21 $/MT compared to fixed bed ozonation (1.33 $/MT) and semi-continuous counterflow ozonation (2.72 $/MT) when

Management Strategies for Control of Stored Grain Insect Pests in Farmer Stores and Public Ware Houses

In the present review article various control methods for stored grain insects are discussed in detail and an emphasis was made to use non-chemical methods. Stored grain infestation is a very serious problem as various life stages of insects cause economic damage and deteriorates the quality of food grains and food products. There are number of stored grain insect pests that infest food grains ...

Inactivation of Listeria innocua, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on surface and stem scar areas of tomatoes using in-package ozonation.

A novel in-package ozonation device was evaluated for its efficacy in inactivating three microorganisms (viz., Listeria innocua, attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium, and Escherichia coli O157:H7) on tomatoes and for its effect on fruit quality. The device produced ozone inside sealed film bags, reaching a concentration of 1,000 ppm within 1 min of activation. The three bacterial cultures were in...

Effect of ozonation of wheat grain on quality bread factory

Ozonation of wheat grain is a quick and easy process that could be realized during the storage. The ozone is in direct contact with the grain and modifies immediately the properties of the wheat. Stability and resistance of dough were increased with ozonation at 40 ppm in comparative with control sample. The results showed a gradual increase in specific volume of balady bread according to the t...

بررسی عملکرد فرایند ازن زنی کاتالیزوری با کربن فعال درحذف اسید هیومیک از محلول های آبی

Introduction & Objective: In recent years, the use of alternative disinfectants and the control of natural organic matters are two approaches that are typically applied in water treatment utilities to reduce the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products. Catalytic ozonation is a new technology used to promote the efficiency of ozonation. The goal of this study was to survey the feasib...

Stored-grains pests and their control with emphasis on military food warehouses in Iran: a review

Background and Aim: In order to providing healthy food and improve food security, it is vital to preserve and protect agricultural products from pest's damage during storage. This is especially crucial for strategic products such as grains and cereals. Inefficient management in this subject would lead to the loss of stored food and will make the country's economic dependence on the other. In pa...
